In the aftermath of the Columbia disaster, the space shuttle program was grounded until July 16, 2005, when the space shuttle Discovery was put into orbit. The Columbia could have stayed in orbit until February 15 and the already planned launch of the shuttle Atlantis could have been moved up as early as February 10, leaving a short window for repairing the wing or getting the crew off of the Columbia. In August 2003, an investigation board issued a report that revealed that it in fact would have been possible either for the Columbia crew to repair the damage to the wing or for the crew to be rescued from the shuttle. Strangely, worms that the crew had used in a study that were stored in a canister aboard the Columbia did survive. Making the tragedy even worse, two pilots aboard a search helicopter were killed in a crash while looking for debris. By: Sarah Pruitt Sarah Pruitt is a writer and editor. space shuttle program NASA would retire its last space shuttle in 2011. Debris and the remains of the crew were found in more than 2,000 locations across East Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. The Columbia disaster marked the beginning of the end of the U.S. Residents in the area heard a loud boom and saw streaks of smoke in the sky. the shuttle disintegrated over northeast Texas, near Dallas. One minute later, the last communication from the crew was heard, and at 9 a.m. The first debris began falling to the ground in west Texas near Lubbock at 8:58 a.m. Because the heat-resistant tiles covering the left wing’s leading edge had been damaged or were missing, wind and heat entered the wing and blew it apart. It wasn’t until 10 minutes later, at 8:53 a.m.–as the shuttle was 231,000 feet above the California coastline traveling at 23 times the speed of sound–that the first indications of trouble began. READ MORE: Space Exploration: Timeline and TechnologiesĬolumbia reentered the earth’s atmosphere on the morning of February 1. I have determined that the emergency conditions in certain areas of the United States in connection with the events relating to the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003, are of sufficient severity and magnitude to warrant an emergency declaration under section 501(b) of the Robert T. The space shuttle Columbia, with a seven-member crew aboard, soars toward a nine-day mission devoted to life sciences research. Their concerns were not addressed in the two weeks that Columbia spent in orbit because NASA management believed that even if major damage had been caused, there was little that could be done to remedy the situation. Although similar incidents had occurred on three prior shuttle launches without causing critical damage, some engineers at the space agency believed that the damage to the wing could cause a catastrophic failure. Eighty seconds into the launch, a piece of foam insulation broke off from the shuttle’s propellant tank and hit the edge of the shuttle’s left wing.Ĭameras focused on the launch sequence revealed the foam collision but engineers could not pinpoint the location and extent of the damage. Columbia finally launched on January 16, 2003, with a crew of seven. The Columbia‘s 28th space mission, designated STS-107, was originally scheduled to launch on January 11, 2001, but was delayed numerous times for a variety of reasons over nearly two years. On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia breaks up while entering the atmosphere over Texas, killing all seven crew members on board.

Garnish the glasses with pineapple or orange slices and enjoy this delicious tropical cocktail. Mix all the ingredients together in a pitcher and pour into glasses filled with ice. To create a Mai Tai, you will need half a cup of pineapple juice, six tablespoons of sweet and sour mix, three tablespoons of light rum, three tablespoons of gold rum, three tablespoons of orange Curacao, two table spoons of dark rum, and ice. Taste and add additional syrup if you want it sweeter. Pour in the cranberry juice and squeeze the lime wedge on top. It is as easy to make as it is to drink plus the non-alcoholic version tastes amazing too. In a glass, pour in the vodka, grapefruit juice and syrup and stir with bar spoon. You can also try creating the favorite tropical drink, the Mai Tai, using gold rum substituted for clear rum. This delicious twist on the classic vodka cranberry drink will have you longing for a tropical beach and crashing waves. Simply substitute an ounce of gold rum for white or clear rum in a glass of cola and you have a new, simple twist on a popular cocktail. Gold rum is usually a very affordable spirit and there are many delicious cocktails that you can create that use it as an ingredient.Ī classic cocktail that you can use gold rum as an ingredient in, is the rum and coke. It won’t technically be a Bay Breeze drink at that point, but it will definitely taste delicious. Gold rum is a great ingredient for many dessert and baking recipes as well. Can you use rum in lieu of vodka in a Bay Breeze drink Sure. Finish by adding the cranberry juice over the back of a teaspoon. Pour the rum first, then slowly add the pineapple juice over the back of a teaspoon. For a layered cocktail, fill the glass ¾ of the way with ice. Many people prefer to have a cocktail that is made using gold rum, but others will drink it straight or over ice. Pour the rum and fruit juices into a glass. The flavors and aromas will vary based on what type of wood was used for the aging barrel. You will find flavors of vanilla, almond, and coconut will be present in the aroma and taste of gold rums because of the aging process being in wooden barrels. Some may even add extra coloring using caramel to make the color of their rums consistent and to achieve the color that they want. The number of year that gold rums are aged depends on how deep the manufacturer wants the color to be. When you want to make a cocktail that has a stronger flavor, you will want to use gold rum instead of white or clear rum. You will find that golden rums are usually more flavorful that clear rums. As rum continues to aged in a barrel, it takes on the amber or gold colors of the wood of the barrel. Eventually, though, cranberry juice was deemed safe again and the Sea Breeze went on to become one of the 1970s most popular cocktails.Rum is usually aged in barrels, unless it is white rum. Shortly after it launched, the Health Department claimed that cranberry crops were poisoned with toxic herbicides and unsafe for consumption. Unfortunately for Ocean Spray, the campaign was a flop. In an effort to market cranberry juice as a cocktail mixer in the late 1950s, the association created a new family of cocktails known as Breezes (which included the Bay Breeze, Hawaiian Breeze, the Cape Codder and, of course, the Sea Breeze). In short, it was nothing like the cocktail we know it as today-that was the doing of the Cranberry Growers Association. By the end of Prohibition, apricot brandy and lemon juice entered into the mix. When it first came into existence in the 1920s, it was made with just gin and hibiscus grenadine. Originally, though, the Sea Breeze had nothing to do with the sea or anything native to New England. Sea Breezes evoke images of Nantucket reds, trips out on the family yacht and East Coast fishing towns circa the 1970s. There are currently several supported drivers: Bcrypt and Argon2 (Argon2i and Argon2id variants). The default hashing driver for your application is configured in your application's config/hashing.php configuration file. It handles almost all of the social authentication code you hate writing on boilerplate and makes it easier for the user to sign up or sign in into an application with just a click. The longer an algorithm takes to hash a password, the longer it takes malicious users to generate "rainbow tables" of all possible string hash values that may be used in brute force attacks against applications. With Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, Laravel Socialite offers an intuitive, fluent interface to OAuth authentication. If you are using one of the Laravel application starter kits, Bcrypt will be used for registration and authentication by default.īcrypt is a great choice for hashing passwords because its "work factor" is adjustable, which means that the time it takes to generate a hash can be increased as hardware power increases. Laravel is a PHP web application framework with expressive, elegant syntax. For Socialite, there are two methods: the redirectToProvider and handleProviderCallback methods. This is useful when adding social authentication to an API: use Laravel\Socialite\Facades\Socialite return Socialite::driver('google')->stateless()->user() Stateless authentication is not available for the Twitter driver, which uses OAuth 1.0 for authentication. Right now, we got manual registration and login routes that work with Sanctum. The Laravel Hash facade provides secure Bcrypt and Argon2 hashing for storing user passwords. I was wondering how to implement Socialite SSO along with Laravel Sanctum SPA authentication (so no API token authentication).
